Josep Oliu holds a bachelor's degree in economics (University of Barcelona) and a PhD in economics (University of Minnesota, USA). His academic career includes the position of associate professor in economics and econometrics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and chair of the department of economics at the University of Oviedo.
Between 1982 and 1983, Josep was an advisor to the World Bank and the Ministry of Economy of the government of Spain. In 1983 he was the director of studies and strategy in Spain’s National Institute of Industry and subsequently its managing director of planning. He was also a board member of Aviaco, Elcano, Enresa and Inisel.
He joined Banco Sabadell in 1986 as technical general secretary and was appointed chief executive officer in 1991. Since 1999 he has been the executive chairman of Banco Sabadell's board of directors.
At present he is also the president of Exea Empresarial, whom he represents in Puig, S.L. He is also a member of the board of trustees of the Princesa de Asturias Foundation and the Princesa de Girona Foundation, and a board member of FEDEA (Foundation for the Study of Applied Economics).
